Reviews

  • Single of the Week

More magical tunesmithing from the divine Miss Bowditch, who possesses Paul Kelly’s knack of weaving characters and stories so real that they could walk right out of the speakers. Cultural-cringers who think that Australian artists who namedrop local hallmarks and places (what are they mean to talk about, New York City? L.A.? London? Come on!) are in some way naff should be handed a copy of Bowditch’s cautionary tale about a sad young mother, who is “Walking down Brunswick st/Buying the baby’s tears with treats” as naturally as anything. Clare is really starting to carve a special niche for herself amongst the local market and should be embraced as the gem she is.

    This is art.

  • Clare Bowditch has that rare power of being able to make a person blush, purely through the sound of her perfect voice. This first smack of the lips from her second album suggest she has gone even further down the road of storytelling balladry. Unsurprisingly, she sounds all the better for it. Bowditch turns what could have been a cheese-puff snapshop of looming single-motherhood into an honest and fully-realised tale with characters so alive you can smell their perfume. In many ways an unrecognised performer, fingers-crossed this will be the year the world comes to its’ senses.
