“Mercifully for my sanity, it seems we can rely on the lovely Clare Bowditch to come up with the goods time and time again these days – and of course I mean that in the least ‘she’s so predictable’ manner you can imagine, because she’s anything but. Bowditch can swing from the bruised-heart folk of ‘Divorcee by 23’ to the moody jazz-tinged pop of ‘On This Side’ with the blink of an eye and makes both as convincing as anything, because she’s real. You can take your wannabe ‘serious arteest’ popstrels and your self-consciously indie songstresses and shove them for all I care; Clare Bowditch is the genuine article.”

“Whilst Ms Bowditch is sounding decidedly self-satisfied in this tune, it doesn’t detract from the typically sublime arrangement around this now instantly recognisable vocal. It’s even got one of those trippy, bowed saw things. Cool. ‘On This Side’ weaves its spell more slowly and subtly than previous Feeding Set tunes, but retains the kind of heartfelt honesty that makes Clare such an endearing artist. Perhaps a touch more experimental, with the acoustic guitar taking a back seat in favour of a more eclectic arrangement, ‘On This Side’ is more of a grower, and augurs well for the forthcoming new album. Although it would seem that any melancholy will now have to be expressed vicariously. But she’s good at that”
