So finally, Marty and I have two days off; we get in the car and head out to our friends’ bush-food farm in South Gippsland. It’s been two hours in the car, we’re five minutes from the farm when Marty takes a phone call from Jake at Channel 7. They’ve had a cancellation: ‘Do you want to play on Roy and HG show tonight?’ Miracle of miracles, everyone just happens to be free so we turn straight back to Melbourne and two hours later we’re on the set, sharing a make-up room with the Hilton sisters. Am I the only person in Melbourne who’s never heard of the Hilton sisters before? Very interesting time was had by all…those who saw the show will know exactly what I mean.
Ah – the thought of playing on national television…it scared me a little. My mate the un-named security guard could see I was ‘struggling’ and, after I confessed ‘This is my first time’ he laid a little bit of wisdom upon me. I actually can’t remember what he said, something to the effect of, ‘Love, you’ll be fine’. Thanks, un-named man with keys.
And thanks Jake, Roy and HG for introducing us to the wonders of Channel 7: what a hoot. As with most first times, it wasn’t our finest ever performance, but at least we got that ball rolling…jeez…
